"Here’s to second chances, hope, and the courage to start again."
Seven years ago, I was lost. Struggling with drug addiction for nearly a decade, fighting the prison system, disconnected from any sense of hope or purpose. At 19, I entered prison for the first time. I was trapped in a gloomy cycle of self-destruction. But at 23, I decided to change - to turn my life around.
That decision was the hardest, yet most important, I’ve ever made. Change didn’t happen overnight, and there were countless setbacks. But with each small, intentional step, and a lot of help, I started to rebuild. Slowly, I began to believe in myself again, and I learned I don’t have to be defined by my past mistakes.
One of my proudest professional moments came last year. I had the immense privilege of speaking at the Inspire Justice Awards in Westminster, sharing my story with hundreds of remarkable people, and being introduced by the legendary Clive Myrie.
As I stood there, recounting my journey, I was overcome with emotion. As I walked off the stage I received a standing ovation, and in that moment, I was struck by how far I’d come. The applause wasn’t just for me; it was for EVERYONE who believes in second chances. It was proof that no matter how broken we may feel, or how low we might have fallen, we CAN rise again.
Today, I dedicate my life to helping young people understand the dangers of drug abuse, and to give hope and inspiration to others who are in the midst of their own struggles. I speak in educational spaces and corporate events, but it’s not just about the talks I give - it’s about creating a ripple effect of change. It’s about planting the seeds of hope in others who may be where I once was.
One thing I’ve learned is that transformation is not linear. It’s messy, it’s hard, and there are pitfalls. But it is always possible. I stand here today not as someone who has overcome everything, but as someone who continues to grow, learn, and give back.
To anyone currently facing their own battles: I see you. I hear you. But I can tell you, light is at the end of the tunnel. Change is well within your reach.
Here's to the real ones who stand by us, who believe in us when we don’t believe in ourselves.
Here’s to second chances, hope, and the courage to start again.
