My Story

In 2017 I was released from prison. Age 23.

Eight years of my life had amounted to a vortex of self-destruction, denial, and suffering ever since that first day. My fairly ordinary life as I knew it would never look the same again.

As a socially awkward, less than confident, and often misunderstood teenager with un-diagnosed ADHD, the idea that I could make my problems seemingly disappear, whilst being a part of something that made me feel accepted, seemed appealing.

But my 15-year-old brain didn’t realise that that short term decision would have disastrous, long-term effects, not only for me but for everyone around me.

What followed was a series of traumatic events eventually leading to an expensive cocaine and opiate addiction, the death of friends, the loss of friends and family, a complete loss of self-worth, numerous court appearances, two custodial prison sentences, mental ill-health and complete, visceral, soul-destroying darkness.

Since getting my life back on track I set up a business called Eeverse, and a non-profit called Be;Live. I have spoken at some of the UK’s most well-known government departments, as well as various conferences, corporate events, Police, universities, colleges, and schools. Additionally, I completed a university degree in Business Management and became a Trustee of The Jericho Foundation who’s seven social enterprises provide work opportunities and individualised support for people who face real and significant challenges in getting a job. I also mentor young people in prison who are preparing to get released.

I am lucky to be here today, but I know plenty of people who either died too young or are now doing long sentences behind bars. When I share my story and life lessons I aim to prevent the above outcomes but I don't beat around the bush. It's real, raw, and unfiltered.

Highlighting the stark reality of drug addiction and crime in a way that is relatable and accessible to youth is my number one objective when delivering talks in schools, but I also look more broadly at what students can do, should they find themselves on a slippery slope, wanting to make a change.

The students loved how real and how relevant James was and his story hit exactly the right level for them.
Thank you James! We will definitely be looking to book you in for next year.
